Prevention - use the correct sprayer
Here you can read about how to properly deal with four different types of sprayers: boom sprayers, greenhouse sprayers, knapsack sprayers and fan sprayers.
When you use a boom sprayer
If the tractor cab is sealed - limited requirements for protective equipment
If the tractor cab is sealed, you do not need to use personal protective equipment within the tractor cab. Leave used protective equipment outside the cab. A charcoal filter insert and a particulate filter for ventilation in the tractor cab is necessary. Replace or recondition the filter every year, or after 300-400 hours.
If the cab is not sealed or is open - greater demands on personal protection equipment
If the cab is not sealed or is open, you risk inhaling spray mist and it can also end up on you and on all surfaces inside the tractor. This places much higher demands for protection.
You need this protection equipment:
- half mask with gas filter A2 brown and particulate filter P2
- protective coverall or full rain gear - you need to use protective clothing Type 3
- protective nitrile gloves
- headgear that is replaced or washed frequently
- rubber boots
- eyewash - spray bottle must be available.
During cleaning you need:
- visor
- headgear
- protective apron or full rain suit of PVC
- protective nitrile gloves
- rubber boots.
Full-cover protective clothing needed when spraying in greenhouses
When you spray in greenhouses, you are very exposed because you are walking in a spray mist indoors. It can be hot and uncomfortable to wear sealed protective equipment - but it is absolutely necessary.
Put on all protective equipment before starting work - the same equipment is required when you mix the preparation, when spraying, and when cleaning the sprayer.
When you clean the sprayer, you can, if you wish, put on a visor instead of a full-face mask, because the risk of inhalation is lower.
You need this protection equipment:
- protective coverall or full rain gear - protective clothing Type 3
- full mask with gas filter A2 brown and particulate filter P3 or a fan-powered respirator (same type of filter as above)
- protective nitrile gloves
- cuffs if you must spray upwards
- rubber boots
- Eyewash - spray bottle or permanent eye shower station must be available.
Knapsack or hand-held sprayer
When spraying with knapsack sprayer, a sprayer lance, or a spray gun, you are very exposed, because you walk in or near the spray mist. There is also a high risk that it will leak onto you from the tank, hose and handle.
When you clean the sprayer you need the same protection as when you are spraying. But you can use a visor instead of a full-face mask.
You need this protection equipment:
- protective coverall or full rain gear - protective clothing Type 3
- half mask with gas filter A2 brown and particulate filter P2
- protective nitrile gloves
- headgear that is replaced or washed frequently
- rubber boots
- Eyewash - spray bottle or permanent eye shower station must be available.
When you use a fan sprayer
If the tractor cab is sealed - limited requirements for protective equipment
If the tractor cab is sealed, you do not need to use personal protective equipment within the tractor cab. Leave used protective equipment outside the cab. A charcoal filter insert and particulate filter for ventilation in the tractor cab are needed. Replace or recondition the filter every year, or after 300-400 hours.
If the cab is not sealed or is open - greater demands on personal protection equipment
When you spray with a fan sprayer, you are very vulnerable because the spray shower is directed upward and outward. If the cab is not sealed or is open, you can inhale the spray mist, which may fall on you and all surfaces inside the tractor.
You need this protection equipment:
- protective coverall or full rain gear - protective clothing Type 3
- full mask with gas filter A2 brown and particulate filter P2 or a fan-assisted respirator (same type of filter as above)
- protective nitrile gloves
- rubber boots
- Eyewash - spray bottle or permanent eye shower station should be available.
During cleaning you need:
- visor
- protective apron or full rain suit of PVC
- protective nitrile gloves
- headgear
- rubber boots.
